Not enough details to be sure but it sounds like he still wants or needs each barrel to fit well on its own instrument. I wouldn't adjust the socket of what seems like a barrel from a random instrument they are just borrowing from their school (they haven't even mentioned if it worked on their clarinet). I also wouldn't adjust the tenon based on that random barrel, which they might not even use on their clarinet. Other barrels might fit fine on the tenon the way it is, wouldn't want to reduce it to find most other barrels are now loose.
