 Confessions of a reed hoarder

Does anyone else have trouble "letting go" of older reeds? I don't mean old stock, but rather reeds that I have used for a long time but I can still hear some good in, even though I know they are close to shot, or some that I worked on for a long time but they never quite sounded or felt like I wanted them to in rehearsals (but the next go-round with the ATG or change of seasons might make them good!). I always think maybe I will use them for something (like practicing) but I end up just keeping them around forever until I finally HAVE to make more room in my reed holders and I reluctantly wall just enough and reorganize.

Right now I have four reed holders (one that holds 6 and three of the eight-reed holders with the humidity packs) full of varying stages of reeds. One has four new Aria Bb and four new Eb reeds that I am breaking in for a concert (I walled 8 reeds tonight to make room for these, which was a major feat!); then I have one with the next most recent batch that I use most, another with a couple different brands/ages and the 6-holder has the ones I just cant' make myself wall yet. I'm not a professional, but I practice 1-2 hours per day and have two nights of rehearsal a week. Is that a crazy amount of reeds?

I play professionally, but only in the summer. I use Vandoren reeds liberally than and toss one when it has passed it's prime. In the "off season", I practice daily on my spare (student model) clarinet and use my Legere reed. Not so great, but not costly either.

I have hundreds lying around, many in tall narrow bottles sorted in type, condition etc. Occasionally I will wet up one of the bottles and find a good one.
Since I like tweaking them I have a stash of reeds to work play with.
Broken or too far gone? Into my wood stove to give me heat in the wintertime.

I too hoard my old reeds. Over the last year or so I’ve been resurrecting Vandorens from 1976. I’ve found many of them to be excellent and far better than reeds of today. I’ve got hundreds of old ones from the period 1976 to present so I’m now expecting to find a steady supply of great reeds. Many of the reeds from my oldest stock won’t have been played much, just tested, and have never been adjusted as I didn’t know about that in those days.
