I've just picked up a bass clarinet and am struggling to figure out how to play low C#. The clarinet (borrowed) has two thumb keys, C, and D and none of the little finger keys seems to make C# by themselves either - I'm obviously missing something. I'd be grateful for what I'm sure will be an obvious (after the fact!) solution.

The only Selmer instrument I've seen with just a C and D thumb key was a basset horn. In that case the C# key was right below the right hand E/B key, or where you would expect the low Eb key to be on every other low clarinet.
If that isn't it something may be misaligned or broken. It might help if you can post pictures.

What model instrument is it? The low C extension fingering system is different for each model, and what you describe doesn’t match my Buffet, but it would help another person answer your question.

The thumb keys are probably low C and C#. Low D will be a left or right pinky key.

Depending on when it was made, the low C# key on Selmer basses has been moved around.
On some it's a RH thumb key and on others (eg. C and D series low C basses) it's for the RH pinky where the low Eb key is found on the majority of other instruments which is next to the RH E/B touch (the low Eb touch on these ones being next to the RH F/C touch).
