Every year. I listen to this piece around 9/11. This year, perhaps because of my own grief at the moment, I simply couldn't bring myself to do it until today, the original Lorin Mazel NY Philharmonic recording. Surprise, surprise the tears welled up again. "He was the apple of my mother's eye"
Can't really even tell if there are clarinet parts, but wondering if anyone here has ever performed it or is a member of an orchestra that has performed it. Wonder what your experience was of doing so. If not what are other's impressions of the piece.

Dear Brian,
I'm sorry for your loss.
I haven't actually heard this John Adams piece, but see that the instrumentation includes two clarinets, bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet. Will definitely listen to it in the next few days.

Yeah I did find the info about it on BH websites. Obviously a rental and required use of a sound tec trainer by Adams handlers. Probably not a cheap venture for sure.

I remember buying the CD that this was on many years ago and being very moved by it. I haven't listened to it since then - maybe it's time to go back and give it a go once more.
With the passage of time, 9/11 is becoming what Vietnam is to my generation, just a figment of the past that I, for one, cling to. It was a formative historical and personal event (a friend's father was killed in the Pentagon attack...I grew up around Washington, DC) but to most of the Gen Z'ers it's relegated to the history books.
It does call for clarinets - 2 sopranos, bass, and contrabass.

The son of a family friend of my ex died. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. Another friend of mine posted a pic of the memorial on 9/11 this year and unknowingly the pic she took included his name. Really spooky
