I place some form of "stop" under the connection between the pad cup and where it terminates at the rod. Then try gentle pressure on the top ring. Sometimes also independent pressure on the third ring is appropriate. If you go too far (rings now are BELLOW the surface of the tone holes), you put a stop under the top ring (or furthest ring too perhaps) and apply pressure to the top pad cup.
