 Selmer K Series

Hello,

I own a Selmer K series (K65**) and was wondering if anyone has any information on this clarinet series. It seems to be tuned to 442 or 445 because it is constantly 1/4 of a cent sharp. Seems quite old, but has the wreath logo.

Thank you!

I have one. They were most likely made in the mid-1920s. At any rate they were the models before the "Radio Improved" (early 1930s, L series) and famous "Balanced Tone" (mid-1930s to early 1940s, L- and M series). They have a narrower bore than the instruments that followed them, and some players (such as Earl Thomas) really like them. I do. Also, and this is just experience and observation, not fact: I think the wood used was denser than the later Selmers.

Tuning is a mystery to me. So many things affect it. If you are using a mouthpiece made after 1960, that may be your first clue as to the sharpness. Barrel length? Your mouthpiece has to be old.

Enjoy!

Bhelde,

There are 100 cents in a semi-tone. Did you mean to say something other than "1/4 of a cent sharp" which is well in tune?

Sorry Hank,

I intended for it to mean about 25-30 cents sharp.
