There are way too many threads about this, so a search on it. I personally prefer Vandorens, Blackmasters to be specific.

There is no one best brand. Everyone likes something different. The only general consensus is to stay away from plain Ricos (their other lines are OK) and stay away from the gimmick Flavorreeds.

I like Vandoren regulars, but they often require adjustment. When I was in middle school, I used Mitchell Lurie reeds, which are excellent for beginning and intermediate students. Oliveris give me a really warm sound that I like sometimes. Find a store where you can buy single reeds and try a lot of kinds (my advice for everything- try lots). Which is best depends on the player.

You can't really tell much from buying single reeds. That one reed could be an exceptionally bad or exceptionally good example of that type. You need to try several of each, preferably a box of each.

I have recently started copying Morre' reeds on Robert Dilutis' Reed Machine .. I am experimenting using Donati, Glotin & Rigotti cane. The Morre' I am using as a guide is a pretty hard reed --- Morre' 2 1/4 ... which is equivalent to a Vandoren 4 to 4 1/2. I am impressed thus far. Driving my wife crazy with splitting the cane, though. : )
