 BD5 rail problem
Author: Alexis

Hi all,

I have had two BD5 mouthpieces recently where, after some use, a chip has appeared in the tip rail. I play these mouthpieces professionally, and look after my clarinets in the way that I have done throughout my career, wirhout incident. The only thing I think could cause it, other than (or perhaps exacerbating) a problem with the material, is my use of slap tongue in contemporary pieces.

Has anyone else had this problem with the mouthpiece?

Best wishes
Alex

I seriously doubt it is caused by slap tonguing... Over the years I have seen mouthpieces where t u e tip was damaged by the interior of the mouthpiece cap... Check that the is no chance you are pushing the mouthpiece in so far the tip contacts the cap. And that there are no raised bits on the INSIDE of the mouthpiece cap (difficult to describe exactly, but I swear I've seen this happen, especially with cheaper metal mouthpiece caps)

It could have been caused by a swab

It wouldn’t be the swab as I don’t use on the mpiece. I suppose its possible its the cap (rovner).

I just find it strange that, all things the same, it is only this particular model (or brand - I used to play non-vd, so not that much experience with other vandorens)

Kind of unlikely that a rovner cap would scratch a tip rail.

I too doubt a plastic Rovner cap could cause any damage... Hmmmm
