Duet collections for early intermediate level
Author: BethGraham

Hi, Guys --

Do you have any recommendations for collections of duets for two Bb clarinets? I'm looking for something to bring to my lessons to play with my teacher.

I've been playing clarinet since January, and it is my first band/orchestral instrument. However, I've played recorder (soprano and alto) for years and have had lots of experience singing in chorales. I love to sight read and prefer classical-style music.

At any rate, I'd like a bit of a challenge. Ideas on books I should look for?

Many thanks --
Beth

One of the standard beginner clarinet duet books. More than 70 duets in various styles.

Still a classic and widely used after all these decades in print (1947).

There is also a Volume 2 (intermediate/advanced).

I'd strongly second GBK's recommendation of the Rubank duets (Selected Duets edited by Voxman).

Perfect -- thanks, you two! I was looking at those online earlier today and only hesitated because they looked dared.

I may go ahead and pick up both volumes so I have a good range of levels of difficulty.

The Rubank books are fine, but your teacher should be the one making recommendations.

One would think....

He just suggested that I bring some duets I wanted to play to my next lesson; it didn't occur to me to ask for recommendations. At any rate, it's all sorted now.

I like Rubank too. You can take a look at some free music with the Clarinet Institute here near Los Angeles. See if you can find some pieces that fit your level of experience.

The Clarinet Institute looks like a fantastic resource -- thanks for putting me on to it. The duets I peeked at are beyond my technical ability, sadly. There's some good stuff there, though. (Telemann! Yippee!)

Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful answers.

Since you want to use two of the same instrument, there's really no reason why you need to have duets specifically for clarinet. You can search through duets at a site like IMSLP for duets for all kinds of instruments.

BTW, the Rubank book isn't graded by skill level, although there are a few very easy ones on the first few pages. It's organized mostly by composers or styles. So even toward the back, for example in the section of canons, there is a range of difficulty. So, I have found that trying to go sequentially from beginning to end is often not a good idea. I do have one student who began lessons with me as an incoming 4th grader and started with the easiest cherry-picked duets but who is now as an incoming 7th grader playing through all the ones we skipped.

Also, the difficulties aren't always technical. They're often rhythmic problems that my 4th to 5th grader wasn't ready to parse out but that may not present as much (if any) difficulty for you as an adult with a long performance background apart from the clarinet.

Just keep in mind that vol 1 of the Rubank duets is much easier than vol 2 - but you'll discover that once you have them in hand.

There's a lot of music on imslp for 2 clarinets - costs nothing to look at them but of course they aren't graded for difficulty:

Rubank Duets Vol.1 is great but very basic for a beginner player, not really recommended for an intermediate level (vol.2 maybe is better)

I recommend free resources like 8notes.com, klarinettennoten.info, imslp etc. they also have plenty of duets books for clarinet on scribd
