 Thoughts on Uebel Advantage A?
Author: jeeves

I'm looking for an A clarinet and saw that Jonathan Copeland has a couple Uebel Advantage As in stock. Has anyone here tried the Advantage A? I searched for info about it and only found one blog post written by an Uebel-sponsored player.

Also, how does the Advantage compare to the Superior?

Funny you should ask!

I JUST tried one that was brought into a store where I teach lessons. I have always found the Advantage a wonderful horn that plays clear and strong giving the R13 a run for its money. For me the Superior is slightly more refined, however, it is just a little more subdued sounding.

The "A" Advantage seems a bit more responsive than an R13 "A" and would be a great match for its Bb brother. I would mention that I was a little disappointed that the low "E" seemed noticeably lower in pitch. But that is the same situation I have with my Yamaha CSG "A" and have learned to live with it.

I tried it 2 years ago at the ClarinetFest and found it to be amazing. If I recall correctly it tunes around 441 to 442, which I loved. I do remember the notes are well in tune, no stuffy notes, and the 12ths are also in tune.

I cannot remember how the upper register plays, however if it were bad I'd remember! It's surely worth trying out.

Well, I did try that horn a while back when I visited London.
It’s great, though I couldn’t say what to compare it with (or how it would match with your current Bb). Having tried the Preference too, I‘d say it’s a good match in their „R13-style“ lineup, that is to say, it’s different from their Superior.

Anyways, I couldn’t notice any intonation issues, but unfortunately didn’t have time to check anyways. Overall tuning including altissimo seemed great. A clarinets have some typical intonation issues, so try the Bb version too. If the low E is too flat, yeah well, you won’t be getting any extra keys at this price, so that’s something one could live with, I suppose.

Besides, the overall quality was more than decent. Love the key action and ergonomics on Uebel horns.

Best regards
Christian

I would try switching between your Bb clarinet and the Uebel to make sure you do not miss keys.

I am only saying that because when I play a plastic Artley outdoors it takes a few minutes to get used to its keys.
