 mouthpiece facing numbers

Hey everyone!
I would like to know what those numbers mean when you first go buy a mouthpiece. The mouthpieces I've been looking at have different openings or facings. Which ones would give you a better (happier) sound in the altissimo register? Thanks for all the hlep.. sorry if the question was already brought up.

Mouthpiece facing numbers are pretty much meaningless. The number that counts is the tip opening. It is indicated in thousandths of an inch (for example .060") or in milimeters (for example 1.53 mm). These two examples are the same size. Classical players usually use small tip openings--.040"-.045" or so. Jazz players generally use larger tips--.046"-.060". Response and altissimo are mostly dependant on factors other than tip opening, such as the quality of the piece.

I believe it took Robert Vandoren 5 years to deign the 5RV and the RV is his initial. Also the tip is 1.05mm so we in England laughed becuase in those days it would never work on the large bore 1010s I used, so, we made fun of it...i never played on anything but a 2 boosey and hawkes which is wide as the thames...tip that is...my grandmother hated clarinets and always hid my reeds when I used to visit..jazz or classical I think everone has there own idea of what tip they like...as long as they don't fall over! get it get.....
