 Question about tone
Author: Liesel
Date:   2001-06-26 01:58

I'm having a problem with my tone and I was wondering if anyone had any advice. My sound is really thin, not full at all. I have an R-13 and use a Hite Premier mouthpiece with 3 1/2 reeds. I've tried using a B-45 mp but I think I get a brighter sound out of my Hite. How can I get a fuller sound out of my horn?

We don't want a brighter sound... how about we try a Vandy M14 or M15 profile 88 you might like that... also harder reeds with the proper diaphramatic support can definetly add depth to your tone... I use my Hite premier in marching band for a brighter more piercing tone. I don't march anymore!

Often this is a hint to know the real meaning of air support:
Play like when you sing. Open your throat like smelling rose. Many players train this by learning Italian song book like Concone. Even pros sometimes train breath control under good voice or singing teachers.

Another idea would be more mouthpiece in the mouth, and/or less pressure to the reed.

Is your reed too hard? Perhaps soaking it in water for 10 minutes before playing might help

Old joke: How do you get a clarinetist to jump off a bridge? Tell him/her it will give them a darker sound.

While I dislike blaming equipment for everything (I once met a girl who could play an old Vito like it was a $4,000 clarinet- the player matters so much more) I'd recommend a change in mouthpiece. The Hite Premier is an entry- level type. Go try a lot and see which fills out your tone.

As for practicing, two words: long tones. They're dreadfully boring but they really help tone a LOT. Keep your embouchure open and chin down. Use good air support- take enough breaths.

Get a different mouthpiece. I like to play on a Vandoren 5RV Lyre and use Vandoren 3 1/2's of 4's. ( I love Vandoren!)

Long tones will help---Start on the low note (example low E) play it for at least 20 seconds then add the register key---make the jump smooth and the upper tone sweet
