Interesting how he often uses B7 patterns over a G7 chord. Is that a common substitution for Beboppers?

I think it's more an F# diminished. He's substituting the whole turnaround. Imagine it with a bass line going | C C E E | F F F# F# | G etc.
So long as you land convincingly on the C chord every 2 bars it doesn't really matter where you go in between.

Thanks Dibbs. That make sense.
Would C# diminished explain why he sometimes plays C#s on the "A minor" chords?
Then the bass line would then read something like:
/ C C# D D# / E A D G / C C F F# / G G C G / etc.
