Buffet B12 with Backun Traditonal barrel
Author: kj2008

I upgraded the equipment from B12 to E13 (with M13 Lyre mouthpiece) two years ago, and since then I hardly use B12. Obviously E13 sounds are superior to B12.
I just wonder if I add Backun traditional barrel, will the sounds of B12 improve noticeably and money worth to do it? I want to make B12 a good back up and use it when I travel (to continue to practice).
Any helpful opinions on this would be appreciated.

To be clear, I am NOT a fan of the Buffet B12 clarinet. I find the internal pitch (moving from note to note) unacceptable on every level.

But even taking my disdain out of the equation, a barrel will only make small changes to the timbre of any clarinet (and/or hopefully improve some issue of the overall tuning.....internal pitch CANNOT be addressed with a barrel).

Depending on what you paid for the Buffet B12, the Traditional Backun barrel may be close to what you paid for your horn. This is NOT a practical ratio in terms of the affect you might achieve.

Personally I'd save the money and put it toward your next better horn.

What happens if you put the E13 barrel on the B12? If a Backun fits the tenon of the B12, so should the E13 barrel. That may give you an idea of what effect a barrel might have.

Generically, I agree with Paul - a barrel won't make enough of a difference to justify the cost.

Thank you for Paul's insight and Karl's excellent suggestion of trying to swap E13 barrel.

Sometimes a barrel (and/or bell) can make all the difference. You never know till you try. I've got a Backun barrel and bell on my R-13 and there is no going back! And just the luck of the draw, but somehow the Backun barrel mysteriously changed the horn's tuning issues to being spot on for most all the notes.
My daily horn is the Yahama SE V-Master (available new only in Japan) Long story short, I had an opportunity to put a Backun Lumiere barrel and bell on it and it utterly transformed the character of the horn - making a great horn into a luminous fat toned much greater horn! Really just loving it. In case anyone wonders, I will mention that I prefer this setup to the actual Lumiere clarinet. Nevertheless acknowledge that the Lumiere is a superb clarinet in all respects.
