 Notation in Fantasiestucke

Can anyone explain the unusual symbol found irregularly throughout Schuman’s Fantasy Pieces (opus 73, published by CF Peters)? It first appears in movement I, measure 8, between beasts 2 and 3. See the attached scan. It’s on both the A and Bb clarinet parts, but not the full score for piano.

They would be the editing clarinetist's suggested breaths.

I recall the same symbol in the Baermann books, having the same meaning Paul suggests.
