Hi everyone,
We bought a second hand clarinet Buffet Crampon E13 and it has a serial number that starts with K99xxx. I can't find the explanation for the prefix 'k' and the year it was built. Can anyone help me?
Thank you!

The predecessor to the E13 was the Buffet Evette Schaeffer clarinet. During the '50's and '60's, and maybe later, Buffet outsourced production of some Evette Schaeffers, as well as some of the Evette, another student model. Evette Schaeffers which were produced by Buffet in France had serial numbers which began with a "K". Evette Schaeffers produced by Malerne (another French manufacturer) had serial numbers beginning with a "B". The Buffet produced horns had a lot of similarities to what is now the Buffet R13, including the R13 bore, and in general were very good intermediate level horns. The ones produced by Malerne were decent student horns, but not the same. Around 1980 Buffet changed the name of the Evette Schaeffer to the Buffet E13. They just continued the serial number convention. I've played an E13 that was made in 1981-2 that had a serial number in the 50,000's. I don't know of any serial number lists after that. Maybe others have information about later numbers. A wild guess might suggest somewhere in the 90's??

I have had a lot of E13 through my hands over the past 25 years and attempted to keep some sort of track of their serial numbers.
I would put 99XXX at early 1990s but most likely about 1993

I also recently bought a 3rd hand E13 clarinet with a K prefix - I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it had a K until I enlightened myself with Buffet's history with Evette Schaeffer.
In 2018, I was told the clarinet was approximately 3 years from new. The serial number is K255XXX
Presumably, the serial would fit with the story of it being quite new?. However, does that mean that even the very recent E13s have a K prefix, meaning the convention continues?
Any input would be appreciated!
