There were articles in the NYT and the Washington Post within the last few days about financial troubles and the transition to a forty week season. One of the articles mentioned the fact that they are going to proceed with auditions to fill some vacancies, but there was no clarinet-specific news.

Day before yesterday I was watching Baltimore local news, on TV, and they did a report saying the BSO has canceled their summer season.

I retired from the BSO 6 years and yes, they cancelled the summer season. The musicians and management have been in contract negotiations for a year now and after announcing the new summer season a few weeks ago the management just cancelled it. Management wants to shorten the season from 52 to 40 weeks so apparently they just did that. I Just asked a friend, bassoon player, if the auditions will still proceed as scheduled, he said he doesn't know. Everything is in flux right now since this all just happened on Thursday without notice between a rehearsal and a concert. They have two weeks left to play, Mahlers 9 this next week and West Side Story with the movie the week after. I'll try to find out if I can and post it but no one may know right now. It's pretty upsetting to the musicians if you can imagine.

Hmmmmmm,
Is it just that 'orchestra management' is comprised solely of money people and the BSO money people have SOME goal in mind (yet to be obvious to the rest of us) that requires the orchestra to go throw a lock out? You know, one of those "The Producers" deals where a flop garners them more money. What are THEIR interests? Clearly it is not a musical performance.
