 Floating rail

I think the Floating Rail ligature is superb, but I hope Mr. Spriggs will forgive me for saying that the cap is not of the same quality. Mine, which looks as though it has been put together by a gorilla with a chain saw, never fit properly and has just disintegrated. So here is what I've done, and I pass the tip on for what it's worth. I took a 35mm film canister, and glued in a layer of thin sponge from a CD box, and on top of that a covering made of chamois leather (but other materials would do as well). I cut a notch to accommodate the tightening rods at the top. The result is a cap that fits snugly, protects the reed and even looks good.

Beejay -

If the sponge from the CD box is what I think it is (i.e., a thin piece of off-white foam rubber put in to keep things from rattling around), it will disintegrate in a few weeks and leave everything full of crumbs. I wouldn't use it for anything that got near my mouth, particularly with the allergies that a lot of people have to latex.

I wouldn't use chamois, either. It holds water and creates a mould colony. Why not use just the metal film can, bent to shape? I'd drill a couple of holes in the top for ventilation, too.

Peter Spriggs reads this list. Perhaps he can suggest something.

Best regards.

I have one of Peter Spriggs floating rail ligatures and also think that it is superb - sans cap. Peter is a very inventive guy and I am sure that he will respond with something more practical - just as long as it does not cost as much as the VD-Optimum silver plated cap that also does not work.

Good advice Ken. What about cork tile? Have to put something in there, or it won't fit.
