 A bit of a crack
Author: Jason
Date:   2001-06-25 05:03

I was inspecting the bore of my clarinet today and I noticed a hairline crack probably 1/2 an inch long, at most, running down from the throat Ab hole. It didn't seem to be very wide at all, but it concerned me a little. So, I was wondering whether this little crack may be having any adverse effect on my horn and what, if anything, I might be able to do about it.

Thanks,
Jason

I would take it to a tech. for inspection. If nothing else it will set your mind at ease.

These lateral cracks develop in clarinet bores from time to time. Usually they are always found in older instruments that have dehydrated by sitting in storage for a long time. Keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't develop into anything more serious. Sometimes they will close on their own depending on storage conditions. You might want to invest in some of the Dr's bore oil (sneezy sponsor) and have a go with it.

Take John's advise and do the oiling right away. And, have someone take a look at it to inspect how deep the crack might be. If you have access to a local music store with a repairman, take it down for a checkup. If not, you might make arrangements to send it to John for him to look at it. Hopefully you have a backup clarinet if you have to do that.

If it goes into a tone hole it can cause quite a significant leak, which could make the entire instrument rather unresponsive.

Jason -

Any crack that goes into a tone hole is serious. It may be just the grain of the wood opening up, but you should get it looked at right away. If it goes through to the outside surface, it's Serious with a capital S. Don't oil it. If your clarinet is a Buffet, get in touch with Francois Kloc, even if it's out of warranty. He will know what to do.

Good luck.
