 unfamiliar trill marking

In the 2nd clarinet part for Shostakovich's 8th, the penultimate bar of the 2nd movement has a trilled half note tied to an 8th note, both Ab's. Between the notes, under the tie, is a note inside parentheses, pitched a half step down (G-natural). What does that indicate?

Trill to the lower note (g).

You can also find this kind of notation in Mahler 1.
