There are many people who play it well on either B flat or A, good for them. If I had known months in advance and had a more leisurely existence I might have done so too. As for the recording, who knows how many times he played it to select the best take - that's not very fast- certainly considerably slower than any of the times I've played it (a couple as 2nd and now once as 1st), and in a performance situation you don't get to decide how fast it goes, the conductor does.
And THAT is the wild card in the pack - it depends on who your conductor is. Zimmerman actually got to negotiate the tempo with a conductor who then stuck to the game plan. Other conducters won't negotiate, or do so THEN go at whatever speed they feel like anyway, or change speeds multiple times in the middle of the solo, or speed up just when you're about to get to the tricky bit. Sitting at home with a metronome and a webcam with your expensive ligature doesn't really do much to prepare you for THAT.
