 Charging for Lessons
Author: Kelly
Date:   2001-06-24 03:03

Hello, I'm going to be a junior in high school next year, and I'm going to be teaching some middle school students clarinet and saxophone this summer. I have no idea how much to charge though. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,
Kelly

I charge $8 dollars a lesson usually 30 to 45 minutes depending on what we're playing and $12 for 45 to an hour also depending. My teacher who's a lot better than me just charges a flat $10 for how ever long we happen to run. But he's real relaxed about payment, you know it kinda like yeah whenever, its all good! But I think thats because he doesn't really teach for the money, although, it really is good money, he teaches because its fun. I really think that even if I didn't pay him; he'd still teach, because, I think I'm his weekly entertainment! I like to make things fun! Well good luck teaching, I hope you have as much fun as I do; it really is great to help somone prepare for an audition and then hear them all excited when they do well, but in the contrary you have to encourage them when they fail, but its all part of teaching.

Kelly -- Let me offer this suggestion first. PLEASE check with your HS band director about whether or not you could charge for lessons and STILL be eligible to compete in contests, etc., with your band. Some states have some very stringent rules AGAINST such a practice because this would classify you as a "professional" and thus you would not be able to enter contests with your band, etc., solo, ensemble, or otherwise!! Please check it out before you do so.

I have a friend who was a senior last year. He gave my brother trumpet lessons, 30 minutes for $5 dollars. I take lessons from a college student for $9 dollars for however long we happen to run. I think that under 10 and over 5 is the way to go. I think that $5 for a trumpet lesson was cheap, but my friend was just doing it for fun.

If I were teaching lessons, I would probably go for $5 myself. After all, I have another job, so it would just be for fun.
