Spectacular playing from all the candidates. Wow! After watching days 1 and 2 live-streamed I thought it would be fun to take a guess at which 12 will make it to the next round and see if I predict any correctly (!)
Here goes:
Li-Ling Lee, Han Kim, Cristina Mateo Sáez, Julija Vrabec, Andrea Caputo, Wooyun Kim, Gerbrich Francine Meijer, Aron Chiesa, Víctor Díaz Guerra, Jonas Lyskjær Frølund, Anton Maiseyenka and Andrzej Cieplinski

We'll all have our favorites. Mine include the aforementioned Julija Vrabec (deep compelling tone and confident playing), Cristina Mateo Saez (all around technical facility), Jonas Lyskjaer Frolund (smooth, sure, and natural with great memory), and one other I especially like--Ann LePage (joyful ringing sound consistent in all registers, a real update on the French school of playing). Except for a couple of German clarinets, everyone seems to be playing Buffet clarinets with dark wood barrels--no fat boy barrels, exotic wood, hour-glass or swivel adjustables. Just the basics. Michael Collins has a revealing conversation with Paul Meyer about the demise of the old national styles and with it the use of vibrato, among other things.

Glad that Ann Lepage made it. What a joy to hear her play! And so did Cristina Mateo Saez and Jonas Lyskjaer Frolund. Three very different and very excellent approaches to the clarinet! Too bad the judges didn't like Julija Vrabec as much as we did.

Edit: I LOVED Ann Lepage's Boulez/Domaines. I don't know the piece and so don't know how it's "supposed" to sound, but it was nasty in the best way.

To me, it is a surprise that Magdalena Faust did not make it to the second round. One reason might be that there is no German clarinet player in jury panel.

Blaz Sparovec made it through and he is playing on German system clarinets and teaches at the University of Arts in Berlin. There were many great things about Magdalena's playing; perhaps the panel was looking for different interpretations of the works than what she had to offer.

The competition sure puts the clarinetist through his/her paces! Now the clarinets are "starring" with four string players accompanying. I wonder what the finals will bring?????

The programs for the semi-final and final are completely fixed. Final: Mozart (Allegro) and Nielsen (well, that's hardly a surprise) with orchestra. So, I guess the only choice would be basset or plain A for Mozart.
Also in the first and second round, the options were rather limited (see https://nielsen2019.medici.tv/about-the-competition/repertoire/), but overall this competition covers a lot of ground.

I guess it depends whether the focus of the panel is musical or technical: Aron Chiesa is the only one who has played flawlessly in all rounds of the competition so far, however some of the others take more risks musically. I can't wait to hear Mozart and Nielsen!

I'd go for Sparovec too - there's a richness to his sound that all the others lack, incredibly talented though they are.

I honestly think Aron Chiesa will win - all the others have had minor technical slip-ups throughout the competition whereas he has played flawlessly. Ultimately though, I'm more interested in learning something from the 3 incredible finalists' interpretations of Nielsen and Mozart, which will no doubt be awe-inspiring!

So congratulations to Blaz Sparovec - he absolutely went for broke in the Nielsen concerto, and I've rarely been so captivated by a performance.
In following up his history on youtube, I found something interesting: here he is 7 years ago doing the Francaix concerto with effortless ease even when only 17. But he's playing on Boehm (Selmer Privilege), so something provoked him to change systems. But to my ears he still seems to have a distinctive sound, despite the very different equipment.

Congratulations to Blaz Sparovec, Aaron Chiesa, and Victor Diaz Guerra for their splendid performances and their placement as top three finishers. All along I was personally preferring Ann Lepage for both interpretation and the most complex, ringing sound (though Blaz's may have been deeper) and would have put her in the top three. I feel my preference still partly vindicated by her receiving the Prize for Interpretation. I'd pay to hear a performance by any of these four (and several who did not place) if they came to town. All of them give great credit to our chosen instrument. I admire Blaz for having the boldness and curiosity to try different brands of clarinet in demanding public performances and show unusual competence and versatility on Bohem and German system instruments in search of his ideal performance goals. Few players have done that, and no doubt he is a worthy first-prize winner.

I think this is the first major title awarded to a German clarinet player since Sebastian Manz who won the ARD competition in 2008. This is particular extraordinary because no jury member is from Germany or Austria. Furthermore, this not only demonstrates that German instruments can handle difficult pieces, e.g., Nielsen, as well as French ones, but only indicates that it is possible to change from French to German and also achieve the highest level.

Blaz is from Slovenia. Unless of course, by German clarinet player you meant someone who plays a German system clarinet, in which you are correct
