Janina -
Very quickly: Schubert's last song -- written for a singer who had both soprano and alto ranges and wanted to show them both off, and also show off her legato and coloratura technique.
The first place to go is the essay in the CD booklet for Graham Johnson's Hyperion Complete Schubert Edition, volume 9. See http://www.hyperion-records.com/details/33009.html . Every music recording library should have this set. Unfortunately, the Johnson essays have not been published elsewhere, though they probably will be. See http://www.hyperion-records.com/schubert-index.html .
Go to your music research librarian for more resources.
Best regards.
