Dear Michelle,
I have been following your posting for years. Thank you for such good information.
I would request a bit of information. My friend passed and his widow left me with his two clarinets. one is a Bb. #28321, ant the other is a”A” marked #4P714.
Both are Buffet,Paris. in fairly good condition. They still play beautifully. I think they are circa 1940”s
As well there are 2 crystal mouthpieces inscribed “WALDO #2”
Would you be able to give me any information about these two instruments.
I am most grateful for any comment you might have.
Sincerely,
Wally Shapiro

The Bb would be from 1946 — a pre-R13 Buffet.
I am unfamiliar with the 4P prefix on the A clarinet, so hopefully someone will chime in soon!

If it says 1P714 instead of 4, it would be from 1923. (Or if it's a hard to read number instead of P, from the early 50s.)
Never heard of the Waldo mouthpiece before-maybe it's a stencil of an O'Brien or Pomarico?

You can distinguish the alternative dates of 1923 or early 50s for the A using the throat A key: if it's the earlier date, it won't have an adjusting screw - these came in about the mid-1930s. Also, a 1920s instrument would probably have the two long LH levers on the lower joint mounted on a single post.
