Dear readers: as Bach's "Art of the Fugue" never benefited from an instrumentation by the composer, do their exist any involving clarinet(s)? I think two clarinets and two bassoons would work very well, or maybe a combination of oboe, cor anglais, clarinet and bassoon. Thank you!

There is a version for full orchestra that was done in the 1930s in England. Performed a few times by the London Symphony Orchestra. The orchestration involves the full orchestra.
I guess you might be thinking more along the lines of chamber music. May be worth doing an arrangement your self for say two clarinets, two horns and bassoons.

Dear Peter, For want of finding anything on the market, I think I will do an arrangement: just for reeds (single and double) I'll take the quartet arrangement as a reference. If and when I have done this, I will send you a copy to get your opinion on it, which I value.

Flute, alto flute, clarinet and bass clarinet is a good combination to cover most of the 3-4 part fugues

True, but I like the reediness of double-reed instruments, which confers an organ-like quality.

Perhaps score for wind quintet? Distributing 3 or 4 lines among 5 players would allow everyone a few bars of rest now and then.

There is a lovely CD (released 1998) of this music by the Loekie Stardust Quartet, a Dutch recorder quartet. Recorders? Yes, and it works very good in my opinion because in total 11 recorder models were used in different combinations for each fugue (from soprano in c'' to great bass in F). This gives each part its own atmosphere and makes the CD very exciting.

Thank you! I'll certainly look into it. When I've finished, I'll make everything available to the clarinet community.
