 Alternate bass clari stand?
Author: Wobby8288

Hi,

I will be playing clarinet, bass clari and alto sax in a school musical but I don't have a bass clari stand (too expensive to buy) and my school doesn't have one either... is there a way to 'invent' a stand or an effective way to hold it? (for fast switching between instruments)
Also, preferably not placing it over two chairs because of limited space.
Thanks :)

do you know any bassoon players that might lend you a basson stand? some bassoon stands can also be used for bass clarinet.

I made one years ago out of a folding metal music stand and a scrap piece of aluminum from a floor transition strip. Bent into two U shapes, made some wing nut attachments, glued black felt to them. Used a couple of pop rivets. It folds up to fit in the BC case.

See if your school will buy one. They aren't cheap, but they are cheaper than a couple of rounds of the inevitable repairs to their bass clarinet after being laid down in an orchestra pit with no stands.

You could always adapt a cheap guitar or cello stand that has the high bracket to hold the head, then fit some sort of cup onto it at the lower end for the spike or bell bow to fit into.

Hercules make the cheapest bass clarinet/bassoon stand I know of, but I'm sure there are others out there.

I had to sit alongside someone in a show who never used a stand for their bass and laid it down on the case that took up a lot of room in the already cramped pit. I inadvertently put my left hand down to my side and clipped the bell of it which was then followed by an angry but hushed 'HOW DARE YOU!' from the owner. The following day and for the rest of the week I brought my own bass stand in for him to use for the sake of my own sanity. So if you are doing pit doubling work on a regular basis, either have all the stands for the instruments you're using or if not, then borrow them for the time you need them for (and make sure you return them to their respective owners afterwards as well as thanking them for letting you borrow them).

I have had an ongoing "good" experience with the Hercules stand. Mine came with a clarinet peg and one peg position.
