Impressions, Yamaha 4CM and the D'Adario Reserve X5
Author: Ben Shaffer

I'm thinking about treating myself to a new MP
. I'm considering these 2, any thoughts..... both have Tip openings of 1.05 which is about what I'm looking for.
As I understand it , both are Ebonite
Any impressions would be greatly appreciated.
Please note I am not interested in any suggestions for other MP's
Thanks!

Hands down the Rico mouthpiece. I haven't run into a playable Yamaha mouthpiece yet and that goes for the ones that my students have shown up with.

I own Yamaha 5CM and D'Addario X10. I was initially attracted to the more delicate altissimo of 5CM. But for everyday use, I think it's too resistant and will tire my embouchure easily. X10 is more free blowing and the tone colour is consistent throughout the registry. Not too sure if the difference is true for 4CM v. x5.

The D'Addario is a superior mouthpiece compared to the Yamaha. Despite the "not interested in other suggestions", I would suggest trying both the X0 and X5. The X0 is generally quicker responding with more clarity and embouchure comfort than the X5.

Personally, I think there's a lot of time and money wasted by clarinet players in following what a player in a particular orchestra or at a major university is using. That being said, when basically no one (none I've encountered) is using a particular brand of mouthpiece, there's probably a good reason. Plenty of players use D'Addario mouthpieces and products, but Yamaha I can't think of a single player.

When you do order your new mouthpiece, be sure to order some new reeds as well. That doesn't mean DIFFERENT reeds than you're currently using necessarily, but new reeds that aren't married to your old mouthpiece will give you a better impression of the new mouthpiece.

Nathan is right on the money with his suggestions.

You may do even better contacting Nathan and telling him what you are interested in and he can hand face a mouthpiece for you!

Ben, since you've already narrowed your choices down to two mouthpieces, the best way to get an answer to your question would be to order one (or two if your credit card limit can handle it) of each and try them yourself. All the major online outlets have some kind of return policy. Even if it costs a small re-stocking fee, your own reaction to a direct comparison is worth the cost. Otherwise, you're letting *your* decision be made by a majority vote of people you don't know.

The fact that the Yamaha mouthpiece is "the road less traveled by" pretty much guarantees that the consensus here will be for the D'Addario. You must have reasons for zeroing in on those two, since you don't want other suggestions. You should make the choice based on your own reactions.
