Hi All,
I found some interesting information on a new bass clarinet that is being produced by the Brasspire Co. Designed by Chief Engineer Kei Aruga of the MAC Corp., this bass looks like it may be something many of us have been looking for in a mid-price Low C bass.
Here is a link to the web site. Be sure to click on the YouTube link to hear some very nice playing.

Has anyone seen this bass and/or played one?
Cheers,
HRL

Looks interesting, neck is not at a very steep angle...

I would be very careful, and check the intonation carefully.
On the tape, there are many sharp notes even when you calibrate at 442.
Of course, no horn is perfect, but I would want to make sure that I could play it in tune in the ensembles that I participate in.

Walter,
Excellent advice as intonation is really critical in my mind.
I did communicate with the designer. While his emails were prompt and very professional, there are no US sites where one can try the instrument before buying. In addition, there is a one year free adjustment policy if you send the instrument back to Japan but there is a no-return policy.

How is this any different or special compared to other identical Chinese basses?

This is important...bass clarinet is far down on my list, so I live with my Yamaha YCL-221II. With everything pushed in, it tunes at 443-444, but it is nearly perfectly in tune with itself, even when the neck is pulled out 1cm and the mouthpiece pulled 2-3mm (my standard assembly).

This is not really a serious comment, but with the 221II and with the long commentary about Legere reeds being flat overall, maybe you could use a Legere and not have to pull out.

I've posted about this more thoroughly when others mistakenly mentioned the 221II is tuned to 442 so they need to open as much as 1/4 of an inch, etc.
Briefly, choosing a middle (bore length) note, about 700mm (approx the middle C area). Using a relatively large difference of 443 to 440, it is about 0.07%, so approx 5mm in length. If this note is tuned to 443, opening 12mm would make it much lower than 440. More for more open notes, less for more closed notes.
There are some other (mostly minor) factors but this is just to give a rough perspective of how much needs to be opened for certain differences. Also considering pretty much everyone needs to have it a little flexible (i.e. even in the USA you can't have the clarinet play sharpest at 440 when it's cold).

Hi All,
In my original post, I included a link to the website below.
http://shop.brasspire.com/bpclb40rs.html
At 2:30 in the YouTube video at the bottom of the page, the bass clarinetist is joined by a pianist. Try as I might, I can't remember the name of this composition or the composer that they are performing. It is quite lovely.
Can anyone help me here?
Thanks in advance.

I appreciate the 2 long rod supports. With the bell resonance opening, I would like to compare bottom C, C# tone with other makes (tempted to see if a cover there would get you a low B). Design looks different enough to investigate. Are its limitations a result of design, or manufacture QC?
