 Poulenc Sonata Errata

Hello.

Third and second measures from the end in the 3rd movement (Poulenc Sonata for Clarinet and Piano). Is there or is there not a two measure trill from D to E altissimo?

I haven't compared the 2006 edition, but my 1990 Chester says no, showing only the piano part. However there is a performance of it on YouTube by Jose Franch Ballester where he plays the trill.

Anyone have the 06 and/or know for sure?

Thanks

I cannot speak to a definitive, hand written edition by Poulenc, but my music doesn't have any trill there. Nor can I really recount ever hearing one in performance. Musically Poulenc was pretty good with creating tension throughout the work (loud/soft, fast/slow, the schizophrenia of the first movement), so I would think having any clarinet sound before the final measure would take away from that punchy moment.

If you're performing it, don't trill. If you're researching a definitive dissertation, wait for a more scholarly response. :-)

Just listened to that. He's a great player, but that's not Weber.

Gervase de Peyer played this trill on his 1987 CD French Music for Clarinet and Piano if I remember correctly....

Yes, Gervase De Peyer played it with the trill in his recordings and performances of the Poulenc Sonata. (Three measure trill - D to E - starting from 4th measure before ending of 3rd movement; last measure played as is.)

Gervase was one of the first people to perform the Sonata and gave the London premiere in 1964.

Gervase told me he had been in communication with Poulenc about the Sonata. The plan was to have Poulenc play it with him in the London premiere, but unfortunately Poulenc died before that could happen. Gervase and Poulenc discussed putting the trill in those bars at the ending, so Gervase performed and recorded it that way (as do I after studying it with De Peyer).
