 base clarinet mouth pieces
Author: Joy

I have been playing the bass clarinet for 3 years. I have been told by a number of teachers that it would be worth while to invest in a new mouth piece. I was wondering what is the best kind of mouth piece for the bass clarinet? Thanks, Joy

Hi, Joy --

Do a search on the BB. This issue has been discussed a number of times.

Joy -

I think all of the custom makers listed on Sneezy make bass mouthpieces. Any of them would be a big step up from the "stock" mouthpiece that comes with the instrument.

I play an Opperman bass mouthpiece, but he is now makes them only for his students. My backup is a Selmer C* refaced by Everett Matson, which plays very well. Selmer bass mouthpieces are made of high-quality material, but they are very inconsistent and almost always need work to play right.

Best regards.

Well Bay mouthpieces are good however, any top of the line mouthpiece is going to be expensive.
The mouthpiece i use on my bass when I play with the symphony is an old Bernie Portnoy bas mouthpiece. It plays and articulates very well, and blends so well with the orchestra. Maximum sound with the lest amount of effort. The upper range is great. Full and colorful and rich just as the lower range is. BUt that's just my experience. Good luck on your search.
The main thing with Bass mouthpieces is just to try ALOT of them to find he right one.

I have a Bay that is quite good, and would buy another if I lost or broke this one. I also have a Selmer backup, but the Bay is far superior.

Bay is the name that I hear tossed around the most. (the Bay's are quite expensive) The Selmer C* & C** bass mouthpieces are covted by many. I have a couple of Selmer "Table" bass mouthpieces that ared very nice to play.

Best,
mw

The Vandoren B45 has a good reputation. At least I like mine. So try one out.

Try a Clark Fobes. Great playing mouthpiece!

A custom made Bay is a good way to go, especially if you want a piece that's a little more open than what's usually available. The most open piece I played before I got my Bay was a Vandoren with a .080" tip opening. The Bay, with it's .100" tip opening blows the Vandoren out of the water.

I recently bought a Clark Fobes. Its a great mouthpiece. I had trouble choosing between the three that were sent to me and I've heard others say the same. They seem to be pretty consistant as far as quality of workmanship.

For inexpensive bass clarinet mouthpieces, you can't go wrong with those from Roger Garrett or Walter Grabner.
