 Accompanying Brahms
Author: JonTheReeds

I've been lucky enough to have the opportunity of playing through Brahms' clarinet quintet with a local string quartet. Can anyone recommend some good accompanying tracks I could buy? Also, is there a piano reduction (for A or Bb clarinet) that you would recommend?

Many thanks

If you're a Finale user, you can make your own by scanning the piano part (and editing the errors out) into Finale and exporting to a Smart Music file. Probably not for the faint-of-heart Finale user, and I don't think any of the lighter versions will do Smart Misc exports. I don't know if the playback you get will actually follow you (using the microphone) - I've never tried it myself. But it gives you control at least at the editing level, where you can control the tempos very closely and even the amount of tempo change in ritardandos.

With any notation program that can output audio files (Finale can output a .wav, I'm sure the others can do .wav or .mp3) you can produce an accompaniment file that you can play back.

But Music-Minus-One would be an easier route.

Note that newer iterations of Finale no longer support OCR scanning and recognition- apparently in deference to copyright laws (https://goo.gl/XS3itj).

To convert pdf's to (Music)XML files, there are products from musitek.com https://www.musitek.com/index.html

True. I use both Neuratron Photoscore and Musitik SmartScore (sometimes one or the other produces a cleaner starting point). There also used to be a product called Sharpeye that I've lost track of - maybe went out of business or was bought out by Musitek.

Either SmartScore MIDI Edition or Piano Edition look like they'd do the job relatively inexpensively, depending on how accurately they scan the PDF.

Thanks, Bennett. I hadn't looked at Musitek in a while.
