So I have just gotten a new clarinet that I am renting and their was a piece in it that I do not know what it is for. My band director explained but I did not pay attention. Can someone tell me what the purpose of this is?

It is shipped with new Buffet clarinets and is placed in the upper tenon of the lower joint to hold down the left pinky E/B key during shipping.
Yours seems to have come apart.
Most people throw them away and never use them because they will create a deep impression on the pads for the E/B and F/C.

Basically a device used to mask the effect of poor pad seating during manufacture on those lower E/B and F/C keys.
If the pads are properly installed and seated then such a device is totally unecessary.
Do Yamaha or any of the other makers find a need to use something like this ??

Bin it and forget it ever existed.
If there's anything to strengthen the case against single use plastic objects, then these things should be high on the list.
And using one will only stress the nylon pin in the LH E/B lever which is something you definitely don't want.
