I think they are all too open at 1.13mm's or more, as the quality control isn't the best. I've been asked by several people to reface the mouthpieces and bring the tip openings down to about 1.07 or so. Depends on each person. I tend to like them a lot better, but not only is the facing the issue but the rails are too wide making the mouthpieces resistant and stuffy, so most players are using softer reeds.
The bore is also a tad bit tight so octaves and 12ths won't always play in tune. I ream the bores out. Oh, the rubber is pretty soft too, so they vary a lot in measurements. For example I've seen the tip openings as open as 1.20.
My feeling is the tip opening is too open for even most pros. So I don't think any students or advanced students should play on them.
As for tuning I do prefer the BD5 442, because it will tune to most orchestras and bands, such as the military bands.
