Vandoren BD5 (13 series vs. Regular)
Author: clarinetmc

Hi All:

Has anyone compared the 13 series (440 Hz) to the Regular (442 Hz) Vandoren BD5 mouthpieces? I've been having trouble being a little low with 13 series and want to know if anyone has any notes on the functionality of the non-13 model, other than the fact that it is higher in pitch? Is the sound or response different?

Thanks!!!

Hello clarinetmc,

I have both the BD5 and BD5 13 series. I have found my BD5 13 to be far less resistant than the regular one. I used a size 3 V21 with the BD5 but am comfortable with 3,5+ V12 on the 13 series. This is probably more to due with differences in facings as ALL BD5’s are inconsistent. The BD5 is shorter, but the baffle looks to be pretty similar. If you like your 13 series but are not happy with the tuning on some notes, I’d try many more 13 series and find one that works better.

I just played a BD5-D and this mouthpiece sounded amazing, but was so low in pitch that it required a barrel 1mm shorter than usual. I'll use it in a concert in the weekend and see how it goes with a big orchestra.

I think they are all too open at 1.13mm's or more, as the quality control isn't the best. I've been asked by several people to reface the mouthpieces and bring the tip openings down to about 1.07 or so. Depends on each person. I tend to like them a lot better, but not only is the facing the issue but the rails are too wide making the mouthpieces resistant and stuffy, so most players are using softer reeds.

The bore is also a tad bit tight so octaves and 12ths won't always play in tune. I ream the bores out. Oh, the rubber is pretty soft too, so they vary a lot in measurements. For example I've seen the tip openings as open as 1.20.

My feeling is the tip opening is too open for even most pros. So I don't think any students or advanced students should play on them.

As for tuning I do prefer the BD5 442, because it will tune to most orchestras and bands, such as the military bands.
