Ok, so I've got a Rovner Versa Ligature.
I was looking on eBay and saw a used Rovner Eddie Daniels Ligature and it looks to be the same.
Are they?
The Eddie Daniels ligature did not have extra Metal Plates, but just had one covered by fabric as does my Versa
Just curious

Same. I believe there was just some parting of the ways between Mr. Daniels and Rovner, but I never got the story.

I used to be Phil Rovners "guinea pig" as he developed his ligatures. I met him at the American Single Reed Workshop we were having at Towson Universlty where I was teaching. I was the first "classical" clarinet player to use his ligature and helped him promote it for several years until it became very polutlar. He'd send me his new designs for my opinion which he constantly experiment with. I have a draw full of those that never went into production for one reason or another. He began marketing the Eddie Daniels because Daniels liked his ligatures and made some suggestion and agreed to use his name for marketing it. At some point Rovner decided to end the agreement for monetary reasons so he didn't have to pay royalties to Daniels any more so he discontinued the model. I can't remember the specifics of each model anymore, there were so many at one time and I changed mine everytime I liked one better than what I was using. I've been using one on clarinet and a different one on bass clarinet for years now that he never put into production, mostly for economic reasons.

Hey Ed,
I had a Rovner question that's been floating around in my head for years. A friend of mine had one of the original Rovners (standard pouch) when they were made of leather. She swears upside down and sideways that that it "sounds" better than any of the synthetic versions. Can you add an opinion to that contention?

I really think it's a personal thing. Depending on your mouthpiece, reed, instrument and concept. The orignal took out a lot of the high frequencies. I loved it but as I changed equipment over the years I favored some others. I'll tell you the truth I don't remember it actually being leather. It's been so long ago and I've given so many away to my students. In any case, it's the concept and feel to the individual.

It's amazing that you got to work with Rovner one on one! Just curious, what is the ligature you would recommend for a closed mouthpiece like the M13?

Sorry GenEric, there is no one ligiture for a specific mouthpiece. You just have to try some to determine which best suites you.

I can't say I prefer any one ligature all the time.
As a matter of fact my Ligature preference probably changes by the hour.
Its funny I might really dislike a particular Ligature one day and the next day its my favorite.
I tell you this, keeping my Clarinet bore, barrel and MP dry all of my Ligatures sound good
Also I just barely tighten my Ligatures
Here's what I've got
Vito V40
M13 vandoren MP
Backum Cocobolo barrel
and the Ligatures
3 Rovner darks in various conditions
Rovner Light
Rovner Versa
Rovner Mark111
2 Bois Plastic Ligatures one shiny, the other matt( convinced the shiny sounds better)
Luyden Plastic Ligature

Reading about Rovner ligatures has been inspirational.After reading about leather ligatures I cut a piece of garment suede to go between the ligature and reed.The piece is about 3/4 of an inch wide.The transformation is amazing. It added warmth and harmony of tone from top to bottom. It seems that much of my struggle to maintain color over a range of notes may have laid within my all metal ligatures.

The results are private to the person. Some people enjoy metal ligatures, some enjoy fabric, some string, some leather, and some wire. There's more styles around than you can imagine.

I know some people change ligatures depending on the reed response and hall so they carry several with them. In a way it makes sense since the ligature does make a reed respond and feel different. I never did it but for some it works.

After checking several sites I decided to buy a Vandoren leather ligature on line.Out of curiousity I tried securing a piece of scrap suede with a stretchy hair band to my mouthpiece.To my surprise it actually worked.A new sound is always exciting but I quickly found the sound to be to dark. Reflecting on the inserts that come with many leather ligatures I inserted a low profile lego brick under the leather and hair band.That experiment brought up the brightness quite a bit.After a short while I replaced the lego brick with a dime. That raised the brightness even higher. I normally experience a lot of frustration from metal ligatures slipping while I play. One of the best features of suede leather is that it does not slip.Another major feature is being able to reposition the reed without having to loosen and tighten the livgature. Over the next few days I hope to try a few other insert experiments to find something warmer. Leather is definety going to be a part of all my future playing.
