If it's not generally known, the major service bands in DC represent an excellent career opportunity for those of you looking to pursue symphonic performance. You'll find getting in just as hard as a third tier orchestra, and it just may be the experience you require to get there.

You do have to meet military height/weight requirements and........go through basic training, but the main DC bands have regular schedules published well in advance with a fair amount of "down time," so you can do other things as well (lot of gigging opportunities in the area).

Just sayin'

I successfully auditioned for A US Navy Band position in Chicago in 1978. It was for any band, not one of the top ones, etc. I turned it down to stay with teaching Band. One reason was having to go through 11 weeks of Basic (I think). Thought I read they eliminated that for musicians some years ago. Guess that was incorrect.

Funny thing, I have VA benefits, health insurance for example, but you won't see me in there. Sorry to sound like a downer, but the VA hospital near me just isn't very good. Actually kind of scary.

As for the job, it's a good job, I was in the Air Force, DC band. You get to play a lot of concerts and take a lot of long bus rides and fly all over the place, including other countries. Some people stay in for life most don't. Some of the musicians are extremely talented and could play in pretty much any orchestra.

Actually if you are on Tri-Care Prime, you see any private MD that accepts this insurance and any visit, and ANY procedure is just $30. I have not even signed up for VA hospitals. :-)
