 Aftermarket Barrels/Bells on Yamaha

Simply put, if I buy a Yamaha, can I add different barrels or am I stuck with Yamaha barrels? This includes different models of Yamaha and switching between Yamaha and Buffet and Selmer. Thanks all.

In my experience there will be no problems using barrels and bells designed for Buffet clarinets on the Yamaha "non CSG" models, though it may not result in any improvement. My experience is mainly with the older Custom models (ycl82, 82-2, ycl72 etc) and students using models like 450 however. I couldn't say where newer models are concerned.

Unless you have a CSG or similar bore Yamaha (I think these are the 85x models), most standard aftermarket barrels should work. I have a coupe of Fobes barrels specifically designed for the CSG; Backun used to make CSG-specific barrels but only has a couple of demos listed right now.

Aw okay. The ones I'm interested in are CSG and YCL-SE. So the CSGs would be custom barrels then?

Yup, custom for the CSGs. I have a few great ones from Dr. Allen Segal.

The CSG model uses shorter ~54-55mm barrels because of it's extra long upper joint, compared to standard instruments which have ~65-66mm barrels.

I have had custom-length barrels from Fobes and Backun for my CSG's, and currently have a P&S Zoom barrel in 54mm (adjustable to 57mm I think).

However, the greater number of barrel options are out there for standard-length instruments...the Yamaha SEVR and CSVR can use practically anything out there, although I do think they are exceptional with their stock barrels!

I'm always amazed that people think they need after market bells on a well designed clarinet.

If you look at Clark Fobes site

https://www.clarkwfobes.com/collections/barrels

he has barrels for the various models, including CSG

My beloved Zoom Barrel is also available for the CSG - or at least I've seen the version for German clarinet being used for the CSG III.
You should probably write to P&R directly and ask them, they'll help. I know someone who had a Zoom barrel made for their German system eefer, at no additional cost - and with great results.
Yeah, I really love this barrel.
