 Any Quality Clarinet Technicians?
Author: cla.fla

Are there any people on here that would be qualified enough to add an Eb/Ab lever to my clarinet? Id be willing to ship my clarinet off, but if you live in the Jacksonville area id be more than happy to meet you in person.

Ideally, i'd want to do it without costing me an arm and a leg, because I'm relatively tight on cash, how much is the standard price for adding a lever? I've heard anywhere from $170 to $300

Thank you

Why do you think you need that key? People have been doing just fine for ages without that key. Even having it on your clarinet doesn't mean you'll use it much.

A LH Ab/Eb came standard on my Patricola C clarinet but after a few months I took the key off - my other clarinets don't have one, and I was constantly getting lost and pressing the wrong key with my left pinky. I had played at the time for 50 years without it and didn't find it enough of an advantage to learn to use it.

You may find it handy to have, especially if you don't have a long history to overcome of not having it. But if you haven't already, you should try a clarinet that has the extra key before you pay to have one installed. You may not like it.

In the words of Stanley Drucker (paraphrased) after a recital when I asked him why there was no Eb key on his Prestige clarinet:

"I've played 60 years without needing one. I don't need it now."

I've installed one Wes Rice LH Ab/Eb Key at the request of a repair customer.

It wasn't too tough, but I had to bend the RH key a bit so that when the new part was clamped on it sat at the exact angle and distance to meet the long arm without binding through the range of motion (And replace that pad after finding the right place). I also had to lightly spin the key arm's tube on a rod because it was binding when initially installed. While it did take some fitting and patience, the results were a very reliable feeling key that didn't appear out of place.

If you go this route for the extra key be prepared to take the time, or to pay for someone's time in case it doesn't all line up right away.

If you don't have a Buffet R13 it will most likely not fit. Mine only works on my R13.
