Playing lower notes on standard bass clarinet
Author: gsurosey

I'm playing "Little Women" in November and there are a few low D's in the bass clarinet part; my bass only goes to a low Eb. I won't be at a rehearsal until tech week, so I won't know for awhile if they're covered in other parts. Is there a way to get lower notes on a regular bass clarinet than are physically present, like the toilet paper tube trick on a clarinet?

Yes, you need a tube roughly 1-1/2" in diameter by 8" long. Make sure to wrap one end with tape to create a good seal with the bell.

You could try a paint roller. With a plastic tube inside, they are not going to crumble like a paper towel tube. Also, you have the advantage of not having to wrap the end with tape as the fuzzy side of the roller holds it in place. Try it, it works great.
