 R13 vs. E11 Eb Clarinet
Author: fugue1

Hi all,

New here to the board-- I am a band director at a small college that needs to replace my Eb clarinet. I need a reliable instrument that will be used occasionally--it won't be a workhorse instrument. Is the R13 worth the extra $$s or would the E11 suffice. Again, I just need a reliable instrument that will last for many years. Are there other options that I should consider?

Thanks!

I've not played the E11 Eb, so I can't comment on if that would be adequate for your needs. But two alternatives at price points between the R13 and E11 are the Uebel Superior Eb and the Yamaha Y681 Eb. I don't know anyone who's played the Yamaha, but their current Bb instruments are excellent, at lower price points than a Buffet R13. I play with someone who has tried the Uebel and is in the process of buying one. He said it was better than his R13 and $1000 less.

So definitely two other options to throw into your calculation.

The Yamaha 681 is a very fine clarinet and the altissimo tuning far better than many more expensive instruments.

Another candidate to consider is the Patricola Eb- this is a very well built instrument and should last a very long time. Both myself and another band -mate own these little jewels and have been very satisfied. The price should make them a very strong candidate.

Fugue1,

I am fortunate to be one who gets a lot of Eb work. When this trend started, a money crunch had me pick the E11 Eb. There are certain aspects of the German manufacuring that I really liked, the keywork is a bit more comfortable, with less interference from the keys between the middle and ring fingers. The lower RH pinkie keys have a slightly different angle as well.

The E11 was good enough to win a couple auditions.

But push comes to shove, there were certain response anomalies that I knew would only be overcome with the R13. I believe that the extra expense has been more than worth it. Superior response, sound and overall quality.

Certain idiosyncrasies needed to be addressed, for my hands, some custom key modifications, and finding a great Buffet/Chadash barrel. But the answer I would have for you is, Yes the R13 is a long-term better choice in the long run.
