 K&M vs Hercules- advice needed
Author: m1964

Hi,
I have K&M ( the longer one) stand for my Bb and now need another stand for my A clarinet.

I was going to buy another KM stand but looked at the Hercules travlite stand, and the reviews seem positive on it.

Did anyone here use both KM and Hercules and which one would you recommend?

I am looking for a stand that would fit into the bell. The longer KM one would work fine because the bells are attached when I use my double case .

I do not want to carry aditional bag so the "triple" Hercules stand js not an option.

Thank you

Hi,

I have several Hercules clarinet stands and used the in-bell one just once. While the compact in-bell one is a clever idea, the center of balance when the instrument is in the stand is too high. The result was the instrument was easily knocked over resulting in me having to have many bent keys re-adjusted. Things were pretty wobbly.

Instead, consider getting an accessory bag and thus having room for the triple stand which is very solid. I use a surplus military flight helmet bag and have all sorts of extra pockets. Music folders fit easily in the bag and there are extra pockets for waters bottles, spare glasses, etc.

Ah.....I've used both!

The advantage of the Hercules was that it was cute and fun to use (shallow but true) and consequently I used it more. But I agree that the center of mass is higher and that makes it less stable than it should be. I actually knocked my clarinet side to side on both stands and found they are pretty much the same (the longer K&M). The other disadvantage to the Hercules is that it wears out faster (reliant on more plastic parts for structural stability as a stand). Mine lasted about three years.

I wound up replacing the Hercules with the SHORT (newer) K&M which I noticed from images actually has FIVE legs! The extra leg helps make it more stable than either the longer brother or the Hercules. I also added three velcro strips (the soft/fuzzy side) to the cone........perfection.

Still if you are headed toward a pit........Blayman.

I knocked the Hercules Travelite stand over with an Eb clarinet on it. Fortunately, it was on the carpeted floor of my practice studio. I never got around to trying a soprano clarinet.

I use the larger Hercules and K&M clarinet stands interchangeably for Bb and A clarinets, but I find the bells of my C clarinets and my Eb get stuck to the K&M peg but not to the Hercules peg, so I use the Hercules stands for the two smaller instruments. Folded up, they fit in my carry-all-bag with my music, reeds and other paraphernalia, even without unscrewing the pegs.

Hi Paul,
I did not consider the smaller KM stand because one of the reviewers on Amazon said that even that it had 5 legs it was less stable than the longer KM stand because the legs were shorter.
I understand you did not feel that way and found the smaller KM stand more stable. Is that right?

Thank you

PS
I need the stand once a week and the environment is "quiet", so I do not need 3 legged hercules stand.

If the legs are shorter (I'd have pull out the long K&M from storage to be sure) it is a negligible difference. The fifth point on the ground is just as much of an improvement as it was for office chairs! I may not have emphasised this but the K&Ms are much more sturdy in construction and design than the Hercules. I actually rolled over the long K&M leg once with an office chair, bending one leg right at the mid-point. I just got two pliers and bent it back good as new. That sort of happening would have destroyed the Hercules.

I found the Hercules to be flimsy. The rubber cap at the top also would stick in my instrument making it difficult to use. The K&M is much better
