 Contra C*

Does anybody know if Selmer still makes or still has any C* mouthpieces to fit the Leblanc contra alto (bari sax size reed)? I've tried to contact Selmer direct but no dice. The catalogs in the local stores show one with the smaller tenon for Selmer, and Vito/Bundy contras. My "chrome contraption" takes one with about a 35mm Tenon. The one I have now needs to be replaced.

I just checked woodwind and brasswind's website. They have Selmer C* mouthpieces, but I couldn't tell you if it would fit your horn. They don't have tenon measurements on the site. I'm sure if you emailed them they could tell you more about the mouthpieces.

Willie -

I got a Selmer C* BBb contrabass mouthpiece at WW&BW about 6 months ago that fits my Leblanc BBb metal contraption perfectly. As you say, it takes Vandoren bass sax reeds.

I got a C* Eb contra-alto mouthpiece at the same time. It was identical in everything except the size of the tenon - same same reeds, same ligature, same mouthpiece cap. I'm pretty sure that the metal Leblanc Eb contra-alto takes the Selmer contra-alto mouthpiece.

The mouthpieces I got were brand new but very crooked. My mouthpiece magician said he had to do extensive work to straighten them out. Good luck with yours.

Willie-

Like Ken, I have the C* mouthpieces for both the Leblanc BBb and Selmer Bundy EEb. However, it is my understanding that the Leblanc and Selmer EEb do NOT take the same mouthpiece. The Leblanc EEb is reported to take the same mouthpiece as the Leblanc BBb. I suggest you verify this before spending that kind of money!

Right now I have a Selmer C* with the large tenon and it is cut to use the bari sax reed ( requires much less air ). Though it is dinged up a bit, it still plays far better than the two stock Leblanc mouthpieces that I also have. I may have to ship it off to have it refaced but I'm not sure who to send it to.

I'd try Everett Matson. However, he prefers to work on new ones, which will mean another $100+. The result, though, will be something that really plays. An alternative would be Clark Fobes, who makes contra mouthpieces.

Best regards.
