 Warranty work on new clarinet

I recently bought a new clarinet. Shortly after purchasing it a crack formed. This was fixed by the place I purchased it from by replacing the top joint. I am really not happy with the results. I feel like the intonation isn’t as good. I have only been playing a couple of years, so its really hard for me to tell if this is the instrument or if it is me. But, after playing it for several weeks I am pretty sure its the instrument. I can make it sound better by pulling the middle out. But, that makes the instrument feel unstable to me and I didn’t have to do that before the repair. After this type of repair, is the expectation that the instrument plays as well as it did originally? Can anything be done to make the intonation better?

There are re-voicing techniques that can be done be competent repair people who offer that sort of service. That can involve some retooling of tone holes and/or the bore.

I would say though that your questions are best put to your dealer and the manufacturer of your horn. They did come through on the crack. They may be willing to aid with the intonation issues. The thing about this though is that you should be prepared to be specific with THEM about what notes are not right and what expectations you might have. Clarinets are variable in intonation and though you did not pick (and could not have picked) the replacement joint, the counter argument could be that the variability of intonation is "correctable" through normal playing practice (even if not the sort of correction that you yourself are not the most comfortable with).

Still, I would ask them. So far they have come through.

Yeah, um so my take on it is a bit different. You bought an instrument that played up to your expectations. Then it failed. The repair still doesn't have the instrument you paid for back to the point where it meets your expectations in the same way as the first iteration. I'd be back to the vendor demanding a replacement that played at least as well,as the original. Just me though. I work terribly hard for my spending money and won't accept poor service or quality.
