Can anyone ID a Conn bass clarinet with the serial # below?

L84539

It’s not wood, looks relatively newish?

Thank you!

If it's not wood it's probably a French built Malerne. Does it go to low D or low Eb?

Here's a pic if that helps.

I don't have access to it so not sure about D or Eb.

If it's a Malerne what does that mean about age, quality level, and value?

Yep that's a Conn low D bass clarinet. The low D makes it desirable, however in my experience they tend to play worse than newer student model instruments such as the Yamaha 221ii unless heavily modified. In that condition it would probably sell for around $1200. The build quality is fairly good, especially for Malerne instruments.

Thanks!

How would you rate it compared to this Bundy?

Geez, that Bundy is expensive! I bought my first Bundy for $200, although granted it needed a ton of work. In my experience Bundys tend to play much better than Malerne instruments, however if you plan on sticking with bass clarinet that low D on the Conn will come in handy. Is there any way to play both and decide which one you like better?
