How to get started with Klezmer
Author: Chalumeau

Hello everyone,

I'm a graduate student getting started with a project on Klezmer music. I would welcome any tips on finding resources for repertoire. Thanks!

Good start are the Kammen International books. Volume 1 & 9. Great tunes, a lot of Klezmer cover. Available for many instruments, get piano, clarinet, and cornet (cornet book has written ornamentations common to the genre).

Also try the famous Canadian clarinetist and teacher, Avrahm Galper's "Mel Bay Book of 42 Klezmer Favorites for Clarinet" (2004). It's still in print, affordable, and easily available from Amazon.com and elsewhere.

Remember to LISTEN to lots of Klezmer stuff. Dave Tarras, Naftule Brandwein, Andy Statman to start. :)

So much of it isn't transcribable. ;)

Listen and transcribe! Dave Tarras and Naftule Brandwein are a great starting point, but from there be sure to check out Giora Feidman (the album The Magic of Klezmer is quintessential) and David Krakauer. Remember, listen not only to understand the tunes but the STYLE! The ornaments and other melodic embellishments are what distinguish the Klezmer style from others!

Any tips on setup? I currently play on a Grabner mouthpiece and a 3.5-3.5+ reed. Will I need to alter my setup to be able to play the ornamentation?

Regarding your setup - you are welcome to contact me offline at grabnerwg@gmail.com.

I might have some suggestions based on what you are using right now.

Is there such a thing as a book that has written out accompaniments, rather than just chord symbols?

Chalumeau,

I just did a Google search on your last question.

Here's the results page:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Klezmer+music+accompaniments&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1

Good luck!
