I think Vitos are some of the most under-valued used clarinets. They’re excellent horns.
Growing up I had a student Yamaha and it was a great horn. So, for some reason I always looked askance at Vitos, but I had never played one. When I was a Band Instrument Repair student at Red Wing, someone asked the woodwind instructor what student clarinet he would recommend. He immediately said “Vito”. He said something about how they were great mechanically and played well. I didn’t really believe him until I restored a few and tried playing them.
They have a very good tone and good intonation. The keywork is great. They seem to stay in good condition and are easy to fix. The original manufacturing quality is high. I don’t know if they are still being produced the same as they were before Vito died, but the old ones are great for sure.
If you pay a bunch for a student Buffet or Yamaha, they might be better horns, but all things considered, there’s no reason not to give a student a Vito. I think any college student would be satisfied with one as a doubling horn or back-up. Very few high-school students would really need anything better, and if they did they would really need a pro horn.

Do you remember the model numbers?
Do you recall what the emblems looked like on the bell, the upper section, and barrel? Was it a Lyre symbol, a rather large "V", or did it say VITO with a circle around the name?
What mouthpiece and reed combo did you use?
Just curious...

I can't say enough great things about the Vitos and Bundys either. Mostly though I appreciate the great intonation. I had played Buffet B12s and the Selmer Signet models that were just disasters.
Bundys and Vitos hold up well against top professional horns too. They are not just horns to "get by" on.
Scoop these up for around $400 all day long.....they are great.
