I'm looking for a double case for the new school year. After a bit of research, I've narrowed it down to the Bam Trekking case (hard shell round one) and the Marcus Bonna case. Has anyone had expereince with both cases? If so, which do you recommend? I will be carrying a couple of method books which is my primary concern with the Bam along with the accessory space because i also need to fit a tuner and clip.
Any other alternatives?

I've always been a bit wary of cases that don't have anything other than a zipper to keep them closed. The original BAM double Trekking case has clips to secure the case as well as the zipper.

I use the Marcus Bonno cases because the keys never touch the cases. So the keys never get bent. It's kind of an amazing design. They float.
It's also easier to wipe down the keys and keep the keys clean.
One of the worst cases is Buffet, because the keys get bent and Buffet doesn't warranty New cases. You are out of luck. At $500 to $600 you would think they would care but they don't. So I left Buffet.

I have a Marcus Bonno triple case (from Muncy).
It's terrific. I agree with Bob completely. Lots of room for clarinets and
clarinet accessories. I appreciate the flexibility the case offers.
With three horns it weighs a ton, but I never know when I might have to
play Eb, so it's worth the slight hassle.

I had BAM double trekking cases for years, went through about 3 over a 10 year period, all were replaced due to the zips failing. That’s why the extra buckles are needed.
Got a Bonna double / triple about 2 years ago. Amazing. As has been mentioned, your clarinets “float”, but it can also carry my Eb as well. Already I can tell it’s sturdier, it will last me longer than the BAM. The zips are excellent. Also, it’s definitely smaller than the BAM.
Personally I think spending extra on the Bonna will leave with little regret.

There is at least one more great choice, and that is the Lomax Humidipro case. Single, double and triple cases available. Keeps your clarinet(s) at a comfortable humidity level, keeps temperature spikes away too. They also have the Plus case that adds a heater to the case, for those in very Northern areas.

I don't trust the Marcus cases. I prefer BAM, however I travel a lot so I sold mine and bought the New Trekking. Problem with that case is the hard shell cracked and I think BAM knew this was happening, so they actually made a new case called the Signature. Anyway, I would go with the Bam trekking case.

I think i'll be sticking too the BAM double case. I found a nice deal for it and personally, I don't think it's worth the extra increase in price.
Anyone with a BAM hard shell, could you fit a Vandoren blue reed case and a Korg TM-60 with clip in the small accessory compartment?

Re some of the issues Bob mentioned, most BAM cases are pretty soft inside and the keys can only move where there is not enough resistance i.e. the way they move when playing.
The cases with the "floating" design (there are several) don't have the keys touch anything, but they put more stress on less contact area in case of drops, bumps, etc.
A lot of Buffet cases are very rigid inside, though statistically I haven't seen their cases cause any issues (and I have plenty of criticism and have no reason to defend them).

This is why zippers kind of suck... I've using the same (non-BAM, non-zipper) case for over a decade and it's basically like new. Though latches can get ruined too.

My mistrust comes from the fact they they are floating. The BAM cases have great shock absorbers. I know a guy who trusted the cases so much that he put everything in the case and slammed it as hard as he could down on the concrete floor. Nothing happened. I also know that string players absolutely trust BAM and I see 90% of string players carry BAM when they can afford it. I know of a friend's cello teacher who trusted the case so much that to prove a point they got their cello in the BAM case and pushed it down the stairs... nothing happened.
The design of the Marcus cases make it so that there are only a few contact points, putting stress on the joints of the clarinet rather than having the material absorb the stress all through out the cases filling.
I've never ever had problems with the zippers on a BAM case. Other than the zipper for the music compartment, but I would say that's because it was getting caught on the inside lining of the case. Also, I've never ever had a problem with keys getting messed up from the case from a BAM case. The BAM cases are cheaper by $150 which is something to consider.
Anyway, I have bought a new clarinet case called the BAM French Travel Case. I travel at least 10 times a year, so I bought that due to the protection and space. I will admit that the BAM Trekking has terrible space. With this new case I can fit my Windows Surface Pro 4, a couple of books, and all of my other clarinet stuff. Theoretically. If I can't I'll make sure to post it.
