Do you guys remember a while back when I was asking advice from this board about which concerto I should choose to do with orchestra? Well it's been chosen for a while now.. the conductor sort of chose Weber 1st concerto for me. She said she wants to do the whole thing which was fine with me, and just yesterday she tells me there's only going to be enough time for 2 movements. I know it's such a big opportunity which I shouldn't turn down, but I think its a waste to do 2 movements and leave out one...it's only an extra 6 or 7 mins anyway. I've decided the first movement is a definate, and so I have to choose between the second and third. I wanted to do two contrasting movements, which would include the slow movement, but it's not the best ending for a performance...whereas the third movement ends with a bang. Which movements would you choose?

I love the third movement! But I also love the second! I'd go with the third because it's more virtuosic and more impressive.

One of my friends suggested to me that I do the whole concerto, but make cuts. He said I could make a cut in the 2nd movement (the horn section) and make another cut in the 3rd movement probably somewhere in the middle...that should bring the time back 5 mins or so which should be fine. If needed I might also cut the cadenza in the first movement. How's that sound?

Nick,
Andy from Canberra here. I wouldn't be cutting and pasting a Weber, when that happens, to me they always lack that little something that makes them so special. If the first is a must for you, don't be ashamed to end with a slow moevement. In a way I can see that being more impressive as instead of following the tradition of playing fast virtuosic stuff, you actually show that you care more about playing great music then impressing an audience. Anyway, if the 2nd move. is played well, it is impressive,
