I am interested in buying a yamaha 221 II bass clarinet but am concerned that Ive heard that it plays very sharp. Is this a problem to you who have experience with this instrumet?
What is the difference to a 221 bass clarinet?

Yes they play sharp to A=440, mine was around A=443. Just pull the neck out to tune with your orchestra. My Selmer privilege b.c. also is sharp to A=440, but it has an adjustable neck. In general, I don't think you can go wrong with a 221-II for the price and quality.

On mine you had to pull the neck out so much the slit in the socket leaked air. The only way I could play in tune was to pull out 1/4" at the neck socket and 1/4" at the mouthpiece. Eventually I removed the neck socket and reinstalled it 1/4" further out with a plastic spacer to fill the gap. Other than that it was a great horn.
